Are weeds getting in the way of you achieving a show-stopping golf course lawn? If they are, eliminate them safely with our collection of pre and post-emergent weed killers.

We have conveniently divided our weed killers into cool and warm-season categories, making it easy for you to choose which weed killer is safe to use on your grass.

The most effective long-term solution for weed control is to have a healthy lawn in the first place. Using fertilizers, biostimulants, and soil moisture managers can help keep your lawn in top condition, reducing the risk of unwanted invaders. If your lawn is flourishing and happy, weeds will have difficulty competing with your grass for nutrients and resources.

When Is the Best Time to Apply Lawn Weed Killers?

The optimum time to use weed killers is in the spring. Why? Because this is when most plants and fauna start growing after a cold winter. Alternatively, fall is similarly effective. Before the winter months approach, this is when weeds are at their most vulnerable. Applying weed killer in the winter isn’t necessary. Most weed seedlings will be dormant under the soil, and the ground will be too hard to allow herbicides to sink in.

How to Choose the Right Weed Killer for Your Lawn

Even though we’ve expertly selected the best weed killers on the market, there’s still a lot of choice. First, you need to identify the weeds you already have. The internet is a wealth of information. Use it to help you recognize common weeds. It’s also important to understand what kind of turf you have — whether it’s made up of warm-season or cool-season grasses. There are weed killers specially formulated for both. Next, you must select a herbicide specifically targeting your weed problem. Check weed killer product labels to ensure the herbicide kills the weeds you want to get rid of.

Think about what you’re trying to achieve. Do you want to prevent weed problems or eliminate those already growing? Pre-emergents will tackle weeds before they grow, and post-emergents will attack growing weeds. Certain weed killer products also include fertilizers, like Dithiopyr .172%, for a weed-and-feed approach.

Lawn Weed Killer FAQs

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you choose the right weed killer for your lawn. With the correct information and product, you’ll be well on your way to a weed-free lawn.

How Much Weed Killer Will I Need?

We recommend a ready-to-use weed control product for small areas, like the organic weed killer spray by Mirimichi Green. This allows you to spot-treat separate regions with ease. For broader areas, you might have to be more economical. Choose a concentrated product, like Certainty herbicide which will need to be diluted with water.

How Do I Apply Weed Killer?

For large areas, we recommend using a pump, battery, or backpack sprayer for even coverage. Your best bet is to double-check what each product recommends, application- wise. A nonionic surfactant will help increase the herbicide’s absorption, sticking, and translocation. Additionally, using a turf dye on large lawns will show you which areas you’ve already sprayed — so you’re not over applying.

Will Some Weed Killers Kill My Grass?

Yes. Some weed killers are non-selective, which means they’ll kill or damage most plants. Herbicides like Celsius WG and Tenacity are excellent contenders if you want to kill weeds without killing your grass

Can I Get Rid of Weeds Naturally?

Having a healthy lawn is the best long-term solution for controlling weeds. But sometimes, even that isn’t enough. Hand weeding, mulching, and homemade pesticides are all viable options — providing you’re not overwhelmed with weeds.

Why Are Weeds Growing in My Lawn?

Don’t take it personally. Weeds are, by nature, opportunists. Often, they indicate problems in the soil. A home soil pH test kit can tell you precisely what is going on underneath your lawn, so you can use the right biostimulants and fertilizer to provide the nutrients your lawn lacks. Weeds can grow in favorable conditions like certain temperatures, excess moisture, or areas where your turf is thin and weak. There’s no surefire way to discern why weeds are rampant in your lawn. Keeping your lawn in top condition is the best way to mitigate this.
